The Door Lock That Changed
How I Sleep in Hotels

Lynn at Adelaide Airport Australia

I have stayed in hotels on every continent. Some were beautiful. Some were budget. Some were places I would not send my worst enemy. And through all of it, one thing has stayed in my bag every single trip for years.

A portable door lock. Ten dollars. The best ten dollars I have ever spent on travel.

Why a Hotel Lock Is Not Enough

Hotel key card locks are convenient but they are not designed with your personal safety as the priority. Housekeeping has a master key. Management has a master key. In some places that key has been duplicated more times than anyone tracks. You do not always know who has access to your room.

That is not me trying to scare you. That is just the reality of staying in places where you are a stranger and someone else controls the locks.

How It Works

A portable door lock slides into the door strike plate from the inside. Once it is in place the door physically cannot be opened from the outside even with a master key. It takes about five seconds to install and five seconds to remove. It fits in a makeup bag.

I put mine on every single night before I sleep. Every hotel. Every country. No exceptions.

The Peace of Mind Is Worth More Than the Price

I sleep better when I travel solo than most people sleep in their own beds. Part of that is exhaustion from actually doing things. But a big part of it is knowing that my room is as secure as I can make it.

That photo was taken in Adelaide, Australia. I landed, found my hotel, installed my lock, and slept like a baby. New country, no anxiety, full rest. That is the goal every trip.

Safety is not paranoia. It is preparation.
